The First 2 Rules of Self-Improvement:
#1 - It will be difficult.
#2 - It will be worth it.

"Fitness cannot be borrowed, bestowed or bought. Much like honor, it must be earned."

"Success is not final, failure is not fatal. It is the courage to continue that counts."
~Winston Churchill

"Pain is temporary. It may last a minute, or an hour, or a day, or a year, but eventually it will subside and something else will take its place. If I quit, however, it lasts forever." ~ Lance Armstrong

"The next time you feel a craving, you're tempted, discouraged, unmotivated or you feel like skipping a workout, focus on your daily goals, not on the huge amount of work that is ahead of you. Tell yourself, all I have is today! All I have is this moment, this workout, this meal, the next 30 minutes, the next hour. If I just do what I know I must do now, then I KNOW I'll reach my ultimate goal eventually. Concentrate on the task at hand IN THIS MOMENT." ~ Tom Venuto

"My will shall shape the future. Whether I fail or succeed shall be no man's doing but my own. I am the force; I can clear any obstacle before me or I can be lost in the maze. My choice; my responsibility; win or lose, only I hold the key to my destiny."---Elaine Maxwell

"It's very hard in the beginning to understand that the whole idea is not to beat the other runners. Eventually you learn that the competition is against the little voice inside you that wants you to quit." -George Sheehan

"There's nothing better than the feeling of setting a goal, working hard to accomplish it, and seeing all of your efforts come to fruition." - Rachel Cosgrove

"There will be days that you do not know if you can run a marathon; there will be a lifetime of knowing you did."

"Give yourself the compassion you deserve for any and all past actions. Stop judging yourself harshly. All those errors and wrong actions were necessary for you to get beyond that place in your life. Be kind to yourself and eliminate any ill feelings you harbor toward yourself." - Dr. Wayne Dyer

Try.
Try again.
Try harder.
Try tomorrow.
Try thinking about what has worked in the past.
Try and ask someone who has done it.
Try and figure out what is not working.
Try it a different way.
Try it once more.
Don't stop trying!

Number one is just to gain a passion for running. To love the morning, to love the trail, to love the pace on the track. And if some kid gets really good at it, that’s cool too.
